- What we can and cannot claim
Halal Indian Food in Toowoomba
The short version. Ice n Spice sources its chicken, lamb and goat from halal-certified suppliers. The venue itself is not halal certified, we also serve beef and we are a licensed bar, so alcohol is served in the same room. For many Muslim diners in Toowoomba that is enough. For anyone who requires a fully certified halal venue, it is not, and we would rather say so on this page than have you find out at the table.
Why we have written it this way
What "halal-certified suppliers" means here
Our chicken, lamb and goat come from butchers who hold halal certification for that meat. The slaughter is certified. What we do not hold is certification for the venue, which is a separate process covering the whole premises: storage, preparation surfaces, utensils, and what else is sold on site.
We do not hold that venue certification, for two straightforward reasons.
- We serve beef, in dishes such as Bombay beef, beef korma, beef madras and beef delight. Beef is not itself prohibited, but our beef is not from a certified halal supply chain.
- We are licensed and serve alcohol in the dining room and at the bar.
Both of those rule out full venue certification, and neither is something we are going to hide.
What that means in practice
If your requirement is that the meat you eat was slaughtered according to halal, and you are comfortable eating in a licensed venue, the chicken, lamb and goat dishes on our menu meet that. That covers most of the menu, including the tandoori section, the biryanis and the majority of the non-vegetarian mains.
If you also need the kitchen and the premises to be certified, or you avoid venues where alcohol is served, we are not the right restaurant. There is no hard feeling in that. It is better you know before you drive in.
The vegetarian route
Worth mentioning because it solves the problem for a lot of diners. Our vegetarian menu is thirteen dishes deep and none of it goes near meat stock. Dal makhani, yellow dal tadka, palak paneer, shahi paneer, channa masala, aloo gobi, malai kofta and vegetable korma are all substantial mains rather than side dishes.
Indian cooking has a very long vegetarian tradition, so eating vegetarian here is not a compromise meal. Plenty of our regulars order this way by choice.
Cross-contact, honestly
We cook beef in the same kitchen. Separate pans are used for separate dishes, but this is a working restaurant kitchen, not a segregated facility. If avoiding any contact with non-halal meat matters to you, that is a level of separation we cannot promise.
What to ask when you book
Call us on 07 4659 7777 and say what you need. Useful things to tell us:
- Whether you eat only halal-slaughtered meat, or need a fully certified venue.
- Whether you would rather be seated away from the bar.
- Whether anyone in your group is vegetarian, so we can plan the shared dishes.
The floor staff will give you a straight answer. If the answer is that we cannot meet your requirement, they will tell you that too.
Ordering for a group
If you are booking a table where some people eat halal and others do not, that is easy enough to handle. Order the chicken, lamb and goat dishes for sharing, keep the beef dishes to individual plates, and load the table up with the vegetarian mains and breads. Nobody misses out and nobody has to interrogate the menu.
Have a look at the full menu before you come in so you can plan what to share.
